A Beginner’s Guide for Women Getting into Clay Shooting
Ladies, Let’s Go Shooting! A Beginner’s Guide for Women Getting into Clay Shooting
Have you ever thought about trying clay shooting but weren’t sure where to start? Whether you're looking for a new hobby, want to challenge yourself, or simply want to try something different—clay shooting is an exciting, empowering sport that women across the UK are embracing.
And guess what? It’s more accessible than you might think.
Where Do I Start?
The best way to get started is to find a local clay shooting club. Many clubs across the country are welcoming, inclusive, and used to introducing complete beginners to the sport. You don’t need any equipment or experience to give it a try.
You can also try shooting at game fairs or shows, where “Have-A-Go” sessions are often run at clay lines. These are short, safe, and fun introductions to clay shooting, with highly trained coaches on hand to support you—no pressure, no expectations, just you and the clays.
Taking It Further: Booking a Lesson
Enjoyed your first go and want more? Great! The next step is to book a proper lesson and yes, there’s a difference. A lesson will focus more on technique, safety, handling a shotgun confidently, and improving your skills.
Many women find that female-friendly coaches or those with experience teaching women help build confidence. You can search for a BASC-accredited shotgun coach or a reputable shooting ground near you.
Thinking About Your Own Shotgun?
If you’re hooked (and you probably will be!), you might start thinking about getting your own shotgun. But first, you’ll need to apply for a Shotgun Certificate through your local police constabulary. This can take a few weeks or even months, so it’s best to apply early if you’re serious.
In the meantime, you can keep shooting with friends, instructors, or other certificate holders who are often happy to let you use their shotgun under supervision. It’s also a brilliant opportunity to try different types of guns—from 12 bores to lighter 20 bores or even .410s.
Buying Your First Shotgun
Once your certificate arrives, it’s time for the fun part—shopping for your first shotgun. Guns range from £50 to £500,000 (yes, really!), but you can find a safe, reliable, and well-fitting shotgun for a few hundred pounds.

Final Tip: Don’t Wait!
The shooting community is one of the most welcoming out there. Many women say they wish they’d started sooner. So why not you? Head to your local ground, grab a friend (or go solo), and give it a try.
If you're still feeling unsure or lacking confidence, and you'd feel more comfortable speaking to a familiar female face, please don’t hesitate to drop me a message and shout “Helen.” I’d be more than happy to help you get started and support you every step of the way.
